Youth Horse Camp!
June 14, 2008

More Camps are always being scheduled, check out our Upcoming Events for future dates!

Youth Camps introduce children ages 6-17 to basic horsemanship and care from the ground up, horseback riding, knot tying, rope braiding, storytelling, the importance of a healthy diet and exercise as well as the magic and majesty of Mother Nature and the world around us. At midday, a snack break provides a period of rest and time to tell stories, reflect and talk about what everyone's learned and had fun doing so far.

Activities for each camp are carefully crafted to meet the experience level of the children attending. Some camps also offer more intermediate levels of horseback riding, trail rides, beginning swordsmanship, spear throwing and archery. Today's campers were beginners. See more photos in a gallery of a more advanced camp.

Zanna, 6, learns that is is very important to keep your balance and stay seated in the middle of the horse while riding. It's also very important to keep your neck 'stiff' so that you don't turn into a bobble-head at a faster gate! After the giggling was over, Zanna rode Julie at a trot all the way around the arena in both directions on the lunge line.

Blake, 5, notices it's a long way down! But he isn't worried - he knows that Brutus is truly a gentle giant. He's one of our most experienced and patient lesson horses who has helped countless students of all ages learn to ride over the years. Today was Blake's first time on a horse, so we took it nice and easy. By the end of his turn, Blake could ride once around the arena while Brutus took a slow jog at the end of the lunge line.

A group portrait: that's camper Zanna, Brutus and Camp Instructor James proving he's not that short.

Brutus shares a quiet moment, resting between riders.

Zanna, 6, feels like a queen on top of the world!

Our youngest camper Valentino, 3, took charge after his lesson and lead Brutus out of the arena and back to
the grooming area after his lesson on the lunge line... mom best keep up - Valentino's ready for the next activity!
