Tournament of the Lake - Valhalla Renaissance Festival
South Lake Tahoe, California - June 1999

This second annual tourney was a fine event. It had some very exciting matches, although it wasn't one of our larger competitions.

For the second time in as many years, lances met tip to tip. This was quite a shock and totally unexpected by everyone. It happened when Bil Woodford and Clif Bassett were having an impressive hard hitting match. At the moment of impact, Clif's lance hit Bil square in the helm. Bil's head flew back and his helm was knocked off! He got off his horse and as soon as his feet hit the ground the rest of him followed. I was uncertain as to his condition until I heard him ask people to stay back a little. He actually came back later and rode Salazar in the closing procession!

Steve Adams jousted in his first tournament and the man did quite well. He presented his shield as strongly as he held his lance. Clif Bassett told him he had never been hit so hard, and Clif was hitting pretty hard himself!

Once again, the Judges at Valhalla did a great job scoring the matches. My thanks to them.

We regret that Quint Ross was not able to compete as he was recovering from a lower arm injury he received while doing a choreographed fall the week before.

May Chivalry Live On!
